1920cm15cm x 30cmWHEN TO SOW April to June WHERE TO SOW Early sowings can be made underglass at a temperature of 16°C, sow 3 seeds per 8cm (3in) pot filled with seed sowing compost. Outside sowings can be made from May onwards into the growing site 5cm (2in) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20-30cm(8-12in) apart with rows spaced 60cm (24in) apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Seedlings sown underglass should be gradually hardened off before planting outside in late May to the above spacing, once all risk of frost has past. Place a support cane at each planting station. Alternatively circular plantings can be made with canes joined at the centre to form a wigwam. For optimum crop, place canes 30-45cm (12-18") apart with 3 beans planted per cane. Water regularly during dry weather. MATURITY July to September HANDY TIP Keep picking regularly or any pods left will soon run to seed and prevent new growth and shorten the cropping season. Any surplus beans can always be frozen. HANDY TIP FOR FLOWER DROP Percy Thrower thought that the main cause was slightly acid soil. He recommended applying a dusting of lime to the soil in early winter over the area set aside for runner beans the next year, so that it would get washed into the topsoil by the winters rain. We have tried it and it does work.

2915cm10cm x 20cmWHEN TO SOW March to July WHERE TO SOW Sow thinly in shallow drills 1.5cm (") deep with 30cm (12") between rows. WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin the seedlings gradually as they grow to an eventual spacing of 10cm (4"). Do not transplant. HARVEST June to October NUTRITIONAL VALUES Rich in beta carotene calcium , iron & folic acid. HANDY TIP Can be sown in early March in a cold frame or under cloches for an earlier crop. Not out of place in a flower garden with its pretty foliage. Can be sown in June to produce baby beet in the autumn.

810cm10cm x 15cmSow thinly direct into finely raked, moist, warm soil at a depth of 13mm (") in rows about 15cm (6") apart. Germination 15-20 days. Pull small carrots for salad use. For larger roots thin the seedlings to 38-50mm (1-2") between plants. Can also be sown in February in frames or under cloches for early roots. Carrots grow best in a sunny position in well cultivated soil which has not recently been manured. To prevent Carrot Fly damage erect a barrier of horticultural fleece to surround the crop. Sowing - cropping: 12-14 weeks.

1050cm45cm x 60cmWHEN TO SOW January to May or September to October WHERE TO SOW Sowings can be made in trays or modules under glass at 13°C. Later sowings can be made into a seed bed in shallow drills 2cm (3/4") deep in short rows. Autumn Sowing should be overwintered in cold frame . WHAT TO DO NEXT As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick off into trays 5cm (2") apart or thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out, spacing plants 45cm (18in) apart between plants and 60cm (24in) between the rows. Outdoor sowings should be thinned to 7-10cm (3-4in) apart , then once plants are 15cm (6in) tall , they can be lifted and transplanted to their final planting positions, spaced the same as detailed above. MATURITY June to October HANDY TIP For an early crop, autumn sowings can be overwintered in a cold frame and planted out in March the following year for the first cut of the season in June.

Plant September-mid November, leaving tips of bulbs above the soil surface, allowing about 10cm (4") between sets and about 30cm (12") between rows. 250g of onion sets (approximately 60 sets) will plant a row of about 6m (19'). Size of sets 14/21mm.

5610cm10cm x 20cmMarch and April or October and November WHERE TO SOW Prepare a flat bottom drill 5cm (2in) deep and 10cm, (4in) wide. WHAT TO DO NEXT Space seeds 5cm (2in) apart throughout the drill allowing 60cm (24in) between the drills, then cover over with soil and gently tamp down with the back of a rake. It is advisable to give some net protection against birds, once seedlings start to grow. As dwarf, plants usually hold each other up and will not require any net support. MATURITY May to July HANDY TIP When sowing in autumn, if the weather is severe it is best to protect plants with cloches.

2810cm10cm x 20cmWHEN TO SOW April to May WHERE TO SOW Prepare a flat bottom drill 5cm (2in) deep and 10cm, (4in) wide. WHAT TO DO NEXT Space seeds 5cm (2in) apart throughout the drill allowing 60cm (24in) between the drills, then cover over with soil and gently tamp down with the back of a rake. It is advisable to give some net protection against birds, once seedlings start to grow , then add some net support for plants to climb and hold the crop. Alternatively very early spring sowings can be made in February or March into a length of plastic gutter or modular cells under glass and then planted out against wires. Slide contents of gutter into a shallow drill made in the plot or space modular plants 10-15cm(4-6in) apart once hardened off. MATURITY July to September HANDY TIP As plants grow and the crops mature, stems can get quite heavy, especially after rain so plants may require extra tying to the support netting.

Later sowings can be made direct into growing site, sowing 2 seeds per sowing station. Do not sow as a single row , sow in blocks spacing as detailed below. WHAT TO DO NEXT Pot raised seedlings should be gradually hardened off in a cold frame before transplanting into the plot once all risk of frost has passed. Do not plant in rows, but plant in blocks , spacing plants 45cm (18") apart each way to aid pollination by wind.
